Spooners Tunnel Official Great Taste Trail Opening Event
The Official Opening of the Spooners Tunnel took place on Sunday, 17 April 2016.
Some additional information about the day.
Parking was available at Belgrove Pub and Spooners Tunnel southern end.
Shuttle services ran for people and their bikes from Belgrove Pub between 10am and 11am. Shuttles left from the parking area opposite Belgrove Pub. Availability was limited so people arrived early if they wanted this option.
The Tunnel was opened at 11am by Kaumatua Andy Joseph and Mayor Richard Kempthorne. From 1pm it was only available for south to north cyclists (and walkers). After 1pm the Tunnel was open to cyclists (and walkers) going in both directions. A torch or lights were required by all people entering Spooners Tunnel.
Fulton Hogan provided traffic management for the event between 9.30am and 1pm. Road rules and directions from traffic personnel and parking marshals were duly respected.
A total of just over 440 people, including Nelson MP Nick Smith, attended the opening and cycled through the tunnel. For some photos of the day please link to our Facebook album HERE.
